A 14-point win over South Warrnambool last weekend has moved Terang Mortlake to the top of the Hampden League ladder.
The Bloods, now sitting a game clear of the Roosters after Saturday’s top-of-the-table clash, have set the benchmark for the league after six rounds.
Playing in front of a home crowd last weekend, the Bloods’ took the early lead, booting four goals six in the first quarter while containing the Roosters to two majors.
The second quarter was a tight tussle, with only two goals separating the sides going into the main break.
The third term saw the Bloods tighten up their defensive pressure, restricting the visitors to just four behinds, and taking advantage of turnovers and movement in their forward line.
Final scores were Terang Mortlake 8.10.58 to South Warrnambool 6.8.44.
Among the best for the Bloods were Xavier Vickers, Alexander Moloney, Kane Johnstone, Gus Bourke, Joe Arundell and Isaac Kenna.
Will Kain, Hugh Porter and Xavier Vickers kicked two goals each, while Samual McLean and Lachlan Wareham kicked one apiece.
The Bloods will travel to Reid Oval this weekend to take on Warrnambool who, coming off a big round-six win over Hamilton and are now sitting just outside the five on percentage, will be keen to challenge the ladder leaders.
The reserves match last weekend was another close one for the Bloods.
The Roosters got an early jump over the home side, kicking four goals two in the first quarter and extended their lead in the second to go into half-time with a handy 21-point lead.
Despite a late run at goals, time ran out for the Bloods – who fell just three points short of the win.
Final scores were Terang Mortlake 6.9.45 to South Warrnambool 7.6.48.
Best for the Bloods were Toby Harris, Jack Lehmann, Thomas Justin, Jake Lee, Charlie Finnerty and Edward Arundell.
Ryan Tanner added two to the scoreboard while other goal kickers were Connor Cardwell, Joel Crawley, Charlie Finnerty and Thomas Justin.
The team now sits fourth on the reserves ladder, a game behind South Warrnambool and a game clear of the fifth-placed Koroit.
Terang Mortlake’s under 18.5s remain in search of their second win of the season after a 131-point loss to the Roosters last weekend.

Tyler Vickers, Ned Roberts, Will Layley, Tyson Royal, Mitchell Hughes and Bayley Primrose were named among the Best for the Bloods while Charlie Box and Tyson Royal were the side’s only goal kickers.
It was a mixed bag of results for the Bloods on the netball courts.
Open – Terang Mortlake lost to South Warrnambool 48-69. Best for the Bloods were Ebonie Knights, Jacqui Arundell and Alice Kain.
Division one – Terang Mortlake lost to South Warrnambool 45-50. Best players: May Suhan, Mahni Wright and Rhi Davis.
Division two – Terang Mortlake defeated South Warrnambool 49-36. Best for the Bloods: Jessica Baxter and Maddison Chesshire.
Division three- Terang Mortlake defeated South Warrnambool 41-37. Best players: Georgia Guest, Zoe Ritchie and Debbie Worland.
17 and under – Terang Mortlake defeated South Warrnambool 39-27. Best for the Bloods: Alice Suhan, Ava Grundy and Alice Kain.
17 and under reserves – Terang Mortlake lost to South Warrnambool 13-51. Best players: Ella Clifford and Mayci Dwyer.
15 and under – Terang Mortlake defeated South Warrnambool 30-26. Best for the Bloods were Tayla Bell and Lara Clarke.
13 and under – Terang Mortlake defeated South Warrnambool 20-16. Best players: Hope Kenna, NikaiahMurfett and Violet Dillon.
13 and under reserves – Terang Mortlake lost to South Warrnambool 4-33. Best for the Bloods were Mikala Madzarevic, Renee Cowan and Sadie Baker.
