Tough day for Cobden bowlers
WITH midweek bowls finals underway, and no Cobden midweek teams in the hunt, the club’s focus turns to weekend pennant.
In division two Cobden played Lorne under the dome at Colac.
Lorne was victorious, winning 99-79, with most of the damage done on one rink.
Nick Kemp, Micheal Hickey, Greg Rooke and Terry Beasley won 30-19 against P. Staley, S. Donne, S. Thorneycroft and C. Weetman.
Noah Mungean, Kathryn Robertson, Brendan Hammond and Murray Williamson were unlucky to lose 16-19 to P. Jacobs, A. Walls, M. Causon Snr. and D. Issell.
Unfortunately, Darren Mulgrew, Colin Hammond, Sam Thow and Mitch Reed were dominated by B. Weetman, N. Owen, M. Mackenzie and R. Lloyd losing 15-40.
The 25 point gap proved too big to catch, especially with only one winning rink.
Ben Robertson, Ash Sinnott, Peter Richardson and Brendan Hutt also lost 18-21 to L. McIlvenny, S. Donne, P. Ironmonger and P. Steven.
This gave Cobden a taste of what standard they must meet to win the division and be promoted.
Next week they will play the preliminary final against the Camperdown Magpies at a venue yet to be decided (but most likely at the dome again).
In division four Cobden managed a shock win over Colac 5, 65-54 points, and won two of the three rinks.
Paul Dwyer, Evelyn Grayland, Barry Morgan and Jeff Hester lost 15-23 to E. Hay, G. Burrell, P. McCarthy and M Halliday.
Rex Perkins, Ken Farquharson, Doreen Coverdale and David Luker won 25-14 over M. Middleton, W. Winchcomb, D. Hutchinson and C. Winchcomb.
Pat Hickey, Joy Beaton, John Raeside and Loreign Andrews also won 25-17, defeating E. Riches, H. Van Es, H. Ezard and A. Maher.
They must now face the difficult to beat Winchelsea 3 team in the preliminary final. Good luck to both teams.
The community bowls, played on a Monday, has completed two nights.
Twenty-six teams are competing, bringing together 104 people to the Cobden greens.
Surprisingly, one of the original participating teams was defeated without scoring (and shall remain nameless) however let’s hope their form is better when fighting fires.
