Tough day for Tigers
WOORNDOO’S cricketers had a tough initiation to the new Colac-South West premier division one competition, losing to Irrewarra by 10 wickets.
The visitors won the toss and sent Woorndoo in, with the home side in early trouble, losing two wickets without a run on the board.
The Tigers were unable to put any meaningful partnerships together as Irrewarra captain Josh McDonald, who played a mix of first and second 11 cricket for Geelong last season, ran through the lineup to claim 6/40 from nine overs.
Teenager Sam Mahncke was the only Woorndoo player to show resistance, top scoring with 43 from 46 balls, an innings that included six boundaries, as the Tigers were dismissed for 83 in the 25th over.
Irrewarra made light work of the run chase, the Redbacks passing Woorndoo’s score in the 17th over without losing a wicket.
This week Woorndoo travel to Camperdown, who also lost in round one, to play the Lakers at SA Wright Oval.
Woorndoo’s division three team start their season this Saturday with a home game against Pomborneit Maroon.
