In a contest that was tight all day at the Woorndoo Recreation Reserve, the Tigers ran out 12.17.89 to 11.14.80 winners.

“My word they made us work for it, they were very good,” Woorndoo/Mortlake coach Tom Ludeman said.

“Just watching them get out of their cars when they got there, they looked big and strong looking, and on the smaller Woorndoo ground it was tough going.”

The Hawks hit the lead late in the game, with the home team fighting back.

“They lurked and lurked then hit the front with about seven minutes to go, I was thinking it was going to be a big reality check.

“But we went bang, bang, kicked two goals and we ended up winning the game; it was crazy how it finished.”

Ludeman was pleased with how his team responded at the end of the game.

“That’s what I took away from it afterwards, when a team hits the front with not long to go, first time for the whole game, it’s quite easy to drop the head, but we didn’t.

“We did the complete opposite, which was very good to see.”

First season Tiger Lochie Gunning kicked five goals and was best for Woorndoo/Mortlake.

“Lochie’s a serious player, I keep telling them all how lucky we are for him to come out to Woorndoo.

“He got us in the game, playing a high half forward role, just getting up and coming back through traffic and setting the standard.

“And to finish up with five off his own boot as well, it was just a great game.”

Midfielder Wil Fleming was also in the best for the Tigers.

“Wil was really good, been solid all year, he sets us up defensively and gets in good spots and gets on the end of a few.”

Damien Pemberton kicked three goals and was also in the best for Woorndoo/Mortlake.

“You can put him back, he can play tall and he’s been hitting the scoreboard too a little bit, which I think he’s enjoying.

“You know what you’re gonna get, if you get in his way, you’re gonna get crushed.”

This week the Tigers travel to Ararat’s Alexandra Oval to take on the Ararat Eagles.
