Corangamite Shire Council’s Youth Services team are presenting a Barista Coffee Making course for people aged people aged 15-25.

Coordinator community engagement and development Bec Reedman encouraged interested young people to book soon as there are only 25 spots available.

“Australians are famous the world over for being serious about our coffee,” she said.

“This one-day course in Camperdown will give you the skills to prepare and serve coffee in restaurants, bars and cafes using commercial espresso machines and grinders.

“You will learn essential coffee skills in a group environment with hands-on instruction.”

Skills include:

  • Follow hygiene procedures and identify food hazards;

  • History and origins of coffee;

  • Grind management and dosing;

  • The start-up and break down of a coffee machine;

  • Creating different coffee styles;

  • Develop skills required to texture milk; and

  • Tasting and understanding the ranges and strengths of coffee.

“Upon successful completion, participants will receive a nationally recognized. Prepare and Serve Espresso Coffee’ certificate qualifying them to work in the industry,” Ms Reedman said.

“If you want to learn the difference between an espresso and a ristretto, a flat white and a latte, go to Humanitix.com and search for ‘Corangamite’ to book your place.”

The course will be held at the Camperdown and District Community House at 6 Gunner Street on Tuesday, April 8 from 9am-3pm.

The course will be delivered by a qualified instructor from Short Courses Australia.

It is funded by the State Government’s Engage! program which encourages young people to take the lead on projects, build new skills and get involved in their communities.
