WITH four seniors unavailable and a month-long hiatus from training and match practice, last Saturday’s first round was always going to be a tough one for Boorcan cricketers.

The Dragons’ division two side was up against a talented Simpson line-up last Saturday and according to captain Lachie Boyle the day was always going to be a tough one.

“We had two out with COVID and another two unavailable; combine that with the wet weather that prohibited us from training over the past month and it was always going to be a struggle,” Boyle said.

“It wasn’t ideal, but to the boys’ credit they did pretty well all things considering.

“We finished on 10/133 while Simpson managed 211.”

Boyle praised the efforts of young under 16 player Sam Hall who bowled a few overs and showed promise.

“Sam did really well and we had a couple of dropped catches in the field so he was unlucky not to have taken a wicket or two,” Boyle said.

“Our opening batsmen were in and out pretty quickly and we struggled to get the runs on the board.

“But we were pretty rusty so there’s lots to work on; hopefully we can re-start our training program this week and move forward from there.”

Henry Moyle put in a solid effort at the crease making 64 and he was supported by Boyle, contributing 24.

Best of the bowlers for the Dragons were Henry Moyle 3/21 and Connor Jackson 5/62.

“Connor is one of our opening batsmen but he’s been at me for quite some time now to have a bowl. With four bowlers out on the weekend I gave him the opportunity,” Boyle said.

“He (Connor) is abit of a part-time spinner but he really stood up on Saturday and will definitely get another bowl this weekend. His figures were impressive.”

Boorcan will take on Pomborneit this weekend in what will be another challenging round.

“This Saturday, with the Noorat Show on, we may be a couple of players short again,” Boyle said.

“But we’ll see how it pans out. We’re usually down for the bye on the show weekend but the re-shuffle of the draw meant our games were pushed forward a week.”
