LISMORE Derrinallum’s A grade netballers had a tough day on the court against league powerhouse Tatyoon last weekend.

Demons coach Amy Lodge loaded praise on her Tatyoon opponents, labelling the Hawks the “benchmark side” for 2022.

“They (Tatyoon) are just amazing on the court; they’re quick, they’re smooth, they’re smart and they just play four solid quarters of great netball,” Lodge said.

“And to top it all off they’re a lovely bunch of girls. We can learn so much from them.

“Even though we went down by 65 goals we can take alot from last Saturday’s game.”

The Hawks got the jump on the Demons early in the A grade game, notching up a quick 10 goals within minutes of the start of the first quarter.

By half-time the home side was up by almost 50 goals but to the Demons’ credit, they managed to peg back a few goals in the third.

“I couldn’t believe how quickly they scored from the first whistle,” Hodge said.

“I’m just thankful we only have to play them once. They had 10 on the board within the first four minutes.

“I honestly don’t think any club will get close to them this season; they’re just a well-polished side and I wouldn’t be surprised if they finish premiers and champions.”

Lismore Derrinallum enjoyed a 24-4 goal victory in the 13 and under game but was defeated in B grade 14-35, C grade 17-24, 17 and under 25-29 and 15 and under 10-14.

“It wasn’t a successful day for us in terms of win:loss ratio but we certainly learnt a lot from all the games played,” Lodge said.

Tomorrow (Saturday) will see Lismore Derrinallum host SMW Rovers at Lismore.

The day will be an extra special one for both clubs according to Lodge.

“We have named this round the 2ek round in honour of one of my best friend’s, Emma-Kate McGrath, who passed away from meningococcal in 2017,” Lodge said.

“Emma-Kate was just 18 when she died suddenly. She fell ill one morning and was gone that evening.

“We’re hoping to see purple all over the courts and on and around the footy ground on Saturday. Purple socks will be available for purchase on the day.”

Lodge and her team-mates are hoping the day will increase awareness of the disease, while also raising some funds towards further research.

“Emma-Kate’s brother plays footy for Rovers so it’s an ideal opportunity for us to get behind this and do all we can.”

With Lismore being a one-court venue (and SMW Rovers not fielding 15 and 17 and under sides this season), game times will be as follows:

  • 10am – 13 and under;

  • 11am – C grade;

  • 12 noon – B grade;

  • 1pm – A grade.
