WOORNDOO Mortlake’s A grade netballers had a hard-fought four goal victory over Glenthompson Dunkeld last weekend.

In what has been a season of mixed results for the Tigers’ A grade side, last Saturday’s 46-42 goal win over the Rams was an encouraging sign for the young team.

Senior co-coach Sarah Cameron praised all players, saying they fought hard against the Rams’ strong defensive pressure to bring home the win.

“I was really proud of the girls and the way they worked together,” Cameron said.

“In the first half they got a bit sucked in to the defense game but they settle well in the second and finished with a well-earned four goal win.”

Cameron made particular mention of junior player Mia Richie who showed great versatility, playing at both ends of the court.

“Mia started in goals with me and then switched to goal defence. She’s an extremely versatile player who gives 110 per cent. Her ability at such a young age is just amazing which is exciting to watch.”

Tasha Killen and Brooke Eldridge also earned the praise of Cameron.

Killen started the game strongly in centre before an ankle injury sent her from the court.

She returned later at wing attack and continued her good form.

“Tasha did very well in the midcourt despite her injury, and Brooke is really starting to find her feet at wing defence.

“Our A grade side is a very young one this year but they have all shown they are capable of matching it with the top sides.

“They may be lacking in experience but they’re definitely not lacking ability. If they stick together they’ll be a strong force next season.”

Best for the Tigers last weekend were Sarah Cameron (with 31 goals) and Mia Richie (6).

Elise Killen also shot nine goals.

The Tigers’ B grade side currently sits in the top five and enjoyed a 34-28 goal win, with goaler Shona Makepeace and defender Melanie Dyson named best for the side.

The C grade team suffered its second loss for the season, going down 22-30 to the Rams.

Best on court were Lucy Jubb and Chantel Reynolds.

In the junior matches, the Tigers’ 17 and under side enjoyed a comfortable 40-18 goal victory.

Goal scorers: Elise Killen (18) and Lily Schuuring (22).

Best players: Elise Killen and Annabelle Glossop.

In the 15 and under game, the Tigers were defeated 18-34.

The 13 and under side lost 9-22 (best on court Indi Wardlaw and Ella Maher).

Woorndoo Mortlake will take on Moyston Willaura at home this weekend.
