UP and coming youngster Max Heffernan earned the praises of Noorat Cricket Club president Michael Williams after a solid effort in the field last weekend.

Heffernan, a strong batsman in the junior ranks, took a “great catch” during Saturday’s game against Cobden, and Williams believes he will continue to strengthen and improve as the season progresses.

“We’re all about encouraging our juniors and we are very fortunate in that aspect to have several talented youngsters including Heffernan and Charlie Conheady, and we’re excited to see how they all develop,” Williams said.

Despite the side’s loss to Cobden on the weekend, Williams said his team was keen to get out on the ground after a delayed start to the season.

“No doubt like every other club in the league, we too were very keen to just get out there and get our first game underway. We were certainly disappointed not to have won but we weren’t disappointed in how we played,” Williams said.

Noorat finished the day on 10/110, more than 50 runs short of Cobden’s 9/165cc but Williams praised batsmen Jacob Fishwick (26), Dave Conheady (20) and Gus Bourke (17).

“It was also great to see our international player, Jamie Harrison from Kent in the UK, finally be able to get out on the field,” Williams said.

“He looked great early, with two fours from his first two balls, but unfortunately he was bowled soon after. It was short-lived but impressive nonetheless. We’ve got a few things to work on as a team this week but we can only get better as the season progresses.”

Williams was also impressed with the efforts of Gus Bourke who caught and bowled Jackson Rock – taking a critical early wicket.

“Jackson is a talented batsman who I think could have gone on to do some real damage on the scoreboard so that wicket was an important one and I think it minimised the damage at the end of the day.”

Noorat will face their nearest rivals, Terang, this weekend in a game Williams believes will be another close one.

“We always have a great battle with Terang and this match will be no exception. It will be good to see how we match up with them this early in the season.”
