Volunteers honoured through awards

THE achievements and dedication of some of the region’s most selfless volunteers and talented athletes and coaches were recognised in Mortlake last week.
The 2023 Wannon Sport and Volunteer Awards saw more than 70 individuals, groups and teams acknowledged for their commitment to their craft and community.
The awards were presented by Wannon MP Dan Tehan at the Mortlake Recreation Reserve last Friday.
Among the list of their receiving awards this year was Mortlake’s Edward Harris, who was perhaps the most fitting award-winner to be recognised at the Mortlake Recreation Reserve.
He was recognised for his dedication and commitment to the Mortlake community through his voluntary role at the Mortlake Recreation Reserve.
Mr Harris volunteered to assist the Mortlake Recreation Reserve Committee with the day-to-day running of the reserve and facilities after the construction of the multi-purpose facility.
“From day one, he took on the role of caretaker of many aspects of the reserve,” Mr Tehan said.
“From cleaning to setting up, putting things away, liaising, opening and closing the facility, and generally ensuring a well-presented and smooth-running operation for all user groups.
“In short, the tremendous success of the Multi-Purpose Facility and the day-to-day operations is primarily due to Eddie's dedication, hard work, and untiring commitment to his voluntary role.”
The Sisters’ David Kenna also earned a nod for his dedication in emergency management.
Mr Kenna was recognised for his 40 years of dedicated service to the Country Fire Authority.
“The CFA Mortlake Group officer, David joined the CFA to make the community a better and safer place to live,” Mr Tehan said.
“David was involved as a volunteer during Ash Wednesday and more recently St Patrick’s Day and Black Saturday bushfires.
“His commitment and dedication to the service is to be commended and despite volunteering for such a significant period, David says he gets back far more than he gives.”
Mr Tehan said the awards were “a very special event” in his calendar as he had the opportunity to thank the community and show his appreciation for all the do for Wannon.
“The Volunteer Awards are an opportunity to recognise the volunteers and show them how much I value their contribution to the community through their volunteering,” he said.
“It is also a fabulous opportunity to showcase volunteers' great work in our community.
“This year, I had a tremendous number of applications, and I was delighted to read about the individuals and groups who have inspired and promoted the spirit of volunteerism, who, through their time and effort, have helped make our local community a better place.”
