LACHLAN Wareham has been appointed senior coach of Mortlake Cricket Club for season 2023-24.

The talented 25-year-old has been playing with the Cats since a young child and has been a valuable contributor to its success both on and off the field.

A former assistant coach and premiership player, Wareham said he was looking forward to the Cats’ second season in the Warrnambool and District League, with the aim once again to push for a finals berth.

“We finished third in our inaugural season in the Warrnambool league last year and will again push to play finals,” Wareham said.

“We still have a stable senior side firing well, but we’re also keen to blood some of our younger players.

“We’re proud of our past success, both on and off the field, and our junior development program, and that will again be a focus in the coming season.”

The Cats will again aim to field three senior sides, in divisions one, two and four, along with 13s, 15s and 17s in the junior competition in conjunction with the Cobden club.

“We’re excited for the upcoming season and will announce coaches once appointed.”

Wareham will be joined by Steve Blacker as assistant coach.

In other exciting news for the club, Mortlake’s Bates IGA supermarket proprietor Ian Mahncke this week presented a cheque for $805 to the club – proceeds from IGA’s Community Chest program.

“The cricket club is a fantastic supporter of our store so it’s nice to be able to give something back,” Mr Mahncke said.

“This is a fitting donation, raised through customer purchases of select products. The cricket club has an amazing facility which is well utilised by the community.”

Club president Simon Ritchie said the Cats were extremely appreciative of the donation.

“It’s donations like this that help the club continue and this money will go towards junior development.”
