WARM conditions greeted around 100 athletes for the third and last championship night at the Camperdown Little Athletics Club track.

With all events finished by 6pm, the club extends its thanks to all age group managers and parent helpers for getting athletes to each event so promptly and ensuring they stayed well hydrated and out of the heat when possible.

There were many personal best efforts, with all competitors doing their best and cheering on other age group athletes throughout the night.

Last weekend the club had 24 athletes compete at the Western Country Region Carnival in Ballarat.

A fantastic effort by all saw most come home with new personal bests, many with medals in their events, and most of all, lots of new friendships made.

This year a junior event was held to include the up-and-coming little athletes who were present this weekend.

Camperdown had three of its younger siblings join the fun, and the club looks forward to seeing them be a part of the carnival action for many years to come.

With the centre given many event helper duties, the club thanks all parents who went out of their way to complete a duty (or for many, more than one).

Doing duty at region events sometimes means parents don’t get to watch their children compete – the club is very appreciative of all these volunteers who give their time to ensure all children have the best possible experience.

On Sunday, Camperdown’s centre secretary Cindy McDougall was tasked with reading the Welcome to Country and then the celebratory speech for the region’s 50th birthday.

Cindy also presented Camperdown club’s multi-class athlete, Thomas Mitchell, with the Western Country Region multi-class ambassador award.

This award is presented to an athlete from the region who has made an exceptional effort to do their best, try their hardest, and who has shown great sportsmanship at all events that they have attended throughout the year.

Congratulations to Thomas on being chosen by the independent region selection panel.

Results from the weekend’s events are available at https://lavic.resultshub.com.au.

Little Athletics Victoria will, within the next week, inform the club which athletes have been successful in gaining a spot at the state championships on March 11 and 12 at Lakeside Oval, Albert Park.

This week is the club’s final week of training with Stuart Canavan from the regional sports academy.

Stuart has graciously given up his time to train club athletes and the fantastic results on the weekend are a testament to the time that Stuart has given to them each Monday throughout the season.

The committee thanks Stuart for this.

This coming Friday night (February 24) there will be no structed competition as all athletes are encouraged to take part in the Terang Lions Club, Terang to Noorat fun run/walk.

With only a week left in the track season, the club looks forward to seeing all athletes back at the track in two week’s time.
