A MEMORIAL plaque paying tribute to former Corangamite Shire councillor Wayne Oakes has recently been unveiled by his family.
A ceremony was held at the manna gum on Curdie Street, Camperdown.
Mr Oakes served as Central Ward Councillor with the shire from 2012 to 2016 and returned to office on a countback in December 2018 following the resignation of another councillor.
He passed away in March 2020.
The protection and preservation of the manna gum, being the oldest tree in Camperdown, was something that was championed by Mr Oakes.
His wife, Judi, spoke of his love for the tree and how his consistent advocacy to council for its maintenance began before he was even elected.
The ceremony was also attended by current and former councillors, with former mayor Neil Trotter paying tribute to Wayne’s commitment to his community and his contribution to the shire as a councillor.
