Windy round one for Bombers

DESPITE a fast start at a windy Cobden Community Bank Recreation Reserve, the Cobden Bombers were overrun by South Warrnambool in the round one senior football match on Saturday.

Cobden kicked four goals to none in the first quarter with the wind, with the Roosters kicking 12 goals to four in the last three quarters to run out 12.10.82 to 8.11.59 winners.

“We started well, which is what we asked for, but we probably didn’t make the most of our opportunities in the first quarter,” Cobden coach Brody Mahoney said.

“South responded really well when they had the breeze, they kicked five to nothing which put us on par pretty much at half time.”

An inaccurate Cobden kicked one goal seven in the third term with the wind before the Roosters piled on six goals in the final term.

“We just didn’t capitalise when we had it in the third, and that ended up being the difference really.

“We had our opportunities, we had 18 inside 50s in the third quarter and only kicked one goal, we just probably weren’t smart with our entries and played into South’s hands.”

Despite the loss, Mahoney took plenty of positives out of the game.

“It was quite a well thought out game by both teams with the conditions, they went really well in a few areas and I was really happy with our boys in a few areas.

“To be able to sustain our pressure, we ended up with 102 tackles and I think there was only something like 14 disposals difference between the two sides, so it wasn’t like it was a one-sided affair in that manner.”

Jordan Fowler, Luke Smith and Jia Anderson, returning from a stint at Panmure, were named as best.

“Jia played in a few different roles for the day, started up forward, and he ended up going back then back on ball a little bit in the end, he was great.
