TERANG Tornadoes’ new season got off to a great start earlier this month.
The club’s under 12 girls, under 12 boys, under 14 girls, under 14 boys, under 16 boys and under 18 boys teams all travelled to Hamilton for a tournament over the weekend of October 8-9.
The club brought home three championship titles and one runner-up finish.
The Hamilton Basketball tournament kicks off the 2022-23 season for the Tornadoes and was once again a huge success for the club.
The weekend set the benchmark for each team and all players were thrilled to return to the court after a COVID-interrupted two seasons.
The under 12 boys’ team includes several players who are now enjoying their first season of representative basketball for the Tornadoes (including their first-time coach Chris Riches).
Division two was divided into two pools of three. Terang defeated Portland 39-20 in round one, before defeating Warrnambool Green 26-19.
They went on to defeat Warrnambool white 39-18 in the quarter semi-final and Hamilton 31-20 in the semi-final.
They progressed through to the grand final but lost to Maryborough Blazers 20-34.
The under 14 boys, under experienced coach Stephen Vaughan, showed composure throughout the tournament and only lost one pool game to quickly progress to the grand final.
They defeated Portland 58-17, Port Fairy 32-25, lost to Horsham 29-35 and defeated Warrnambool Blue 44-22.
The boys defeated Warrnambool White in the semi-final 37-30 and then defeated Horsham in the grand final 30-25.
Under 16 boys’ coach Griffen McLeod took this very well groomed side through the tournament, with some close matches before taking out the grand final.
They defeated Maryborough 48-14, Warrnambool Blue 55-15, Horsham 28-27 and then won the grand final 37-31.
In the absence of Michael Payne, Brett Taylor took up the role of coach of the under 18 boys.
The boys left nothing in the tank and went through the tournament undefeated; with wins against Hamilton 47-22, Portland 60-25, Horsham 48-31, Casterton 70-23 and Horsham in the grand final, 70-31.
This team will now head to division one for the Warrnambool Basketball tournament.
The Tornadoes now looks forward to their first CBL game this weekend when they will host Surfcoasters.
