HISTORY was made over the weekend when the Corangamite Lions female team took to the field for the first time.

The new team is a first for the area, and the local women’s team will join teams in Warrnambool and Port Fairy this season.

Corangamite Lions Football Club president Jamie Norton said the club had been trying to field a women’s team for a number of years.

He said while the team lost its first match against Port Fairy over the weekend, the team was still finding its feet.

“The girls have not really played before,” Norton said.

“We’ve got a group of young girls that have to learn to gel together.

“It’s just a bit of fun and also getting sport options growing for women.”

Norton said the team had nine members so far.

“We’re still needing more to join to keep going through the year,” he said.

“We’re training once a week, each Thursday at Scotts Creek at 6pm.

“We play each Saturday or Sunday.”

The season has seven matches remaining before moving into finals.

The local team is part of the South West Victorian Football Association.

Anyone who would like to join the team are invited to attend training or contact the Corangamite Lions Football Club Facebook Page.
