Women set sail on uplifting course
SAILING has long been a sport of skill, determination, and teamwork - qualities that know no gender.

At Derrinallum Yacht Club, female sailors of all ages are proving the water belongs to everyone.
With a strong and growing base of women and girls involved in the club, the message is clear: sailing is for anyone with the passion to learn, compete, and experience the thrill of the open water.
“With tomorrow (Saturday) International Women’s Day, it is the perfect time to celebrate the incredible women of Derrinallum,” yacht club member, Megan Leersen said.
“Those women are challenging stereotypes, achieving success and inspiring the next generation of female sailors.
“Acceptance is a core value here; every member is celebrated for their enthusiasm and ability, not for their physical appearance or background.”
Sailing has traditionally been seen as a male-dominated sport, but that’s changing fast.
“With our learn to sail program at Derri, the girls outnumber the boys seven to one. More and more women are stepping up, grabbing the tiller, and showing that skill, strategy, and determination (not gender) is what really counts on the water,” Leersen said.
And it’s not just about participation.
Derri’s female sailors are kicking goals.
Over the past few years, a team of Derrinallum women has competed across Victoria and even interstate, proving they’re a force to be reckoned with.
Closer to home, the ladies are making waves at local regattas and representing on the national stage.
Recently, two of the club’s female members sailed to victory, taking out a pennant at a neighboring club.
“But their success isn’t just about trophies,” Megan said.
“It’s about the message they send every time they race. Women belong at the helm, on the podium, and everywhere in between.
“And it’s not just on the water where women are making an impact, they’re also at the heart of the club’s leadership.”
Narelle Halliday and Melissa Wood play a vital role as club handicappers, ensuring fair and competitive racing.
Narelle also holds the position of club treasurer.
Secretary Fiona Noone has dedicated 20 years to keeping the club running smoothly, Megan Leersen brings energy and creativity as the club’s socials manager and Lou Hollis has been the backbone of the Learn to Sail program for over two decades, introducing countless newcomers to the joy of sailing.
“None of this would be possible without the trailblazing women who came before them,” Megan said.
“Strong female role models have always been a part of Derrinallum’s story, with legends like Liela Lane, Myra Snibson, Jennifer McArthur, Debbie Holliday, Betty Drake and Joyce McClure helping to build the club from the ground up.
“Their dedication, hard work and passion laid the foundation for the thriving, inclusive sailing community we have today.”
Accordeing to Megan, the tides are turning at Derrinallum.
The club has women who are leading, excelling and inspiring.
“They continue to challenge expectations, break barriers, and light the way for the next generation. The wind is in their sails, and the future has never looked brighter,” Leersen said.
