Women’s networking event

A GROUP of women got to know each other better in Cobden last week.
The morning session was a joint program with Corangamite Shire maternal child health nurses, partnering with Cultura.
Project worker south west settlement and community services Carolyn Gatti said the nursing team had identified some women in the community were quite isolated and as they were born overseas did not have the automatic family and friendship networks local people often have.
“It was decided to focus on Women’s Health Week and invite women who had moved to Corangamite Shire from overseas to a morning tea to meet other women and be introduced to services in their community,” she said.
Deputy mayor of Corangamite Shire Geraldine Connheady welcomed attendees to the session.
The morning tea was held at Cobden Maternal Child Health Centre.
The women and their children were introduced to a number of new useful contacts including Helen from Cobden Uniting church op shop, Angela from South West Health Care, Settlement Program, the maternal child health nurses and other workers offering support to young mothers.
Each participant received a Jean Hailles Women’s Health Week showbag filled with health information, free gifts, books for the children and contact numbers for local programs, workers and services.
“We enjoyed a lovely morning tea and new contacts that can be followed up,” MsGatti said.
“Some information was gleaned from the participants before they left and will direct future programs for Corangamite Shire.”
