WOORNDOO Mortlake’s A grade netball side is gearing up for a testing period of games following a hard fought win over Ararat Eagles last Saturday.

The Tigers improved its record to 4-0 to start the year with a 50-42 triumph.

Coach Ash Spokes said the win was giving her side valuable momentum ahead of a tough period of clashes starting against Great Western next Saturday.

The Tigers are set to meet Hawkesdale Macarthur this weekend, with that clash expected to give Spokes and co another chance to finetune its plans and structures.

“We’re going pretty good but we’re coming into the harder sides now,” Spokes said.

“It’s probably helped us playing a few of the easier sides early on to get the gist (again).

“We’ve also had a couple of new girls come in but we’ve gelled pretty well.

“It’ll be interesting when we take on a few of the tougher sides in terms of how we’ll actually go.”

Spokes expects her side’s game plan to stack up against the stronger sides, adding Woorndoo Mortlake was looking forward to the challenge.

“I think we’re ready but one thing that might let us down is our fitness,” she said.

“We’re not fit enough but other than that we’re playing well together.

“Our fitness and having a couple of new players still getting used to our style of game is something we’re working on but other than that I’m hoping we go alright.”

Spokes said the win over the Eagles came with the Tigers utilising its youth and B grade players.

The side was missing Georgia McCormick, Chloe Woods and Nicole Anderson, with the likes of Brooke Eldridge and Taylah Casson stepping into the top grade.

Spokes said the Tigers did not produce its best performance, but added it was positive her side could find a way to win without key players.

“We had a few girls out in Georgia and Chloe, and Nicole still isn’t playing which didn’t help us, but at the end of the day a win’s a win,” she said.

“It wasn’t a great win, we didn’t perform how we’d like but a win’s a win at the end of the day.”

In the lower grades, Woorndoo Mortlake won the B grade, 18 and under and 13 and under contests but was defeated in the C grade clash.
