Woorndoo on top of division two
WOORNDOO Cricket Club is eyeing a potential return to South West Cricket’s top division after the Tigers secured its first division two flag in 12 seasons on Sunday.

WOORNDOO Cricket Club is eyeing a potential return to South West Cricket’s top division after the Tigers secured its first division two flag in 12 seasons on Sunday.
Victorious Tigers skipper Grant Cameron said the club would consider its options in rising a division after it defeated Mortlake by 97 runs in the decider at Pomborneit.
It was the club’s first division two flag since 2008/09, with many of the winning team previously also featuring in Woorndoo’s division three victory in 2017/18.
“We’ve got a number within the club who are pushing to get an A grade side again but there is a few who think we might be a year or two away,” Cameron said.
“Going off the team’s performance on Sunday, there’s enough indication there to show that we could step up. We’re not going to step up and win straightaway and to win an A grade flag we’d probably have to recruit a few.
“But there’s definitely a few of us who want to get A grade back at Woorndoo.
“We’ve had it before and we’d love to get it back.”
Cameron said his team-mates were thrilled to add a division two flag to their collection, admitting everything worked in Woorndoo’s favour throughout the contest.
“There’s a few guys who played in the division three flag so they’re pretty happy a couple of years on to get a division two flag,” he said.
“I think literally everything went our way. We had a bit of luck, everyone performed well, we batted well across the board, we bowled sensational and our fielding was on point.
“Everything just worked for us.”
The Tigers batted first and put 8/179 on the board, with Cameron (43), Tom Gray (37) and Brody Mifsud (25 not out) best serving the premiers.
In reply, Mortlake was dismissed for 82 despite the best efforts of Nathan Jones (23) and Jason Lehmann (23).
Mifsud (2/9), Isaac Fowler (2/4), Matt Pemberton and Keilan Bamford (2/21) shared the wickets for the Tigers, while Jake Tanner (3/34) had earlier been Mortlake’s best bowler.
Cameron said he was confident his side would defend 180.
“In my head I thought anything above 150 would be a good score,” he said.
“I was thinking if you worked in 50 run increments that anything between 100 and 150 they would be thinking that they only have to get 100 so anything over 150 probably felt like a big target I reckon.
“We effectively made 150 and they let us get away with a few extras in the end which probably played in our favour as well.”
Cameron said he found it difficult to pinpoint his side’s standouts but said Mifsud was deservingly named man of the match.
“Brody deserved every bit of it,” he said.
“Him and Tommy Gray batted really well, they were hitting shots to blokes and getting a single out of them which is something I harped on.
“I said to the boys if we can get quick and efficient singles we could another 30 runs and we definitely got that from them on Sunday.
“Tommy made a few on top of that too but everyone played their part.”
The division three grand final was also played on Sunday, with Princetown (4/158) recording a six wicket victory over Bookaar (155).
Princetown’s Ryan Jones (41 not out and 5/15) was named man of the match, while Bookaar’s Tim Lucas served his side well with a knock of 62.
Meanwhile, the division one decider will go ahead this Saturday at Cobden Recreation Reserve after poor weather washed out the contest before a ball was bowled.
The match will start at 11.30am.
