Works start on new lookout
WORKS have started on a new lookout in the Port Campbell National Park which will bring visitors up and close to the waters of the Southern Ocean.
Wrapping around ‘The Blowhole’, at the popular Loch Ard Gorge precinct, the lookout will provide a new experience for the millions of people who visit the Port Campbell National Park.
Parks Victoria regional director Jason Borg welcomed the new project when it was announced late last year.
“It’s a busy and exciting time in Port Campbell National Park with projects that celebrate this special landscape and ensure it provides a memorable experience for the millions of people who visit,” he said at the time.
“These new viewing areas will improve accessibility and better showcase the dramatic scenery of this special environment.”
Parks Victoria and the Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation are working together to deliver this project, the third for the national park s part of the Victorian Government’s Shipwreck Coast Master Plan.
The master plan is designed to improve opportunities for visitors, strengthening the local economy, and providing employment opportunities through sustainable tourism.
The design of the new lookout has been led by the Eastern Maar community, ensuring it reflects the biocultural values of this location on Keerray Woorrong Country.
The project is expected to take about 12 months to complete, subject to on-ground and construction industry conditions.
Nearby at the Twelve Apostles, works are nearing completion on another new lookout.
The soon-to-be-completed Saddle Lookout replacing viewing areas which no longer catered for visitor numbers, providing a safer and more accessible way to view the iconic rock formations.
Completion of the Saddle Lookout is expected in late summer.
