Youth Council delivers: Corangamite Shire recently completed a $20,000 upgrade at the Terang skate park after a mother of three took her concerns to the shire Youth Council.

TERANG skaters can stay protected from the rain and sun thanks to a new shelter at the Ewing Street skate park.

Youth mayor Tess Lourey said a mother of three contacted her in 2020 to discuss her concerns and aspirations for the skate park.

“The Youth Council then discussed their concerns and opinions on the topic with council’s facilities and recreation team,”she said.

“It was then added to their budget for the 2021-2022 budget process.

“The shelter is a welcome upgrade to the skate park.

“Like a lot of Terang residents, I see how many individuals use the skate park and having a place to sit out of the elements will only increase the use by families.”

Tess said the upgrades showed how a community voice through the Youth Council can help create positive change.

She thanked the facilities and recreation team for its time and dedication to the Youth Council to help benefit the community.

“The facility is just a starting point of what the youth council can do and it is fantastic to see communities being positively impacted,” Tess said.

Tess encouraged community members from across the shire to get in contact if they had anything they would like Youth Council to be involved in or discuss at their monthly meetings.

“The Youth Council is currently recruiting members so please get in contact with the youth team if you are looking to be involved or seeking more information,” she said.

Council infrastructure projects officer Craig Fowler said the 6m x 3m shed was started and completed in June at a cost of $20,000.

“This will give local skate park users an area to take shelter from the elements while using the facility,” he said.
