Zac takes home award
YEAR 12 student Zac Stevens was recently awarded a Certificate of Excellence at the Master Builders Victoria 2026 South West Region Apprentice of the Year Awards.

In his second year apprentice for his Certificate III in Cabinet Making and Timber Technology, Zac said he ended up in the profession after doing work experience with a family friend.
“My boss, my family’s known him for a while, so I did work experience for him and I think I just sort of liked it and ended up doing it, and I’ve been doing it since and I’ve been enjoying it,” he said.
“It feels rewarding because the work you do, you sometimes think it goes unnoticed, but it really doesn’t.
“It’s definitely rewarding to know that the little work does pay off and does come back to you – it feels good.”
Zac is a Victorian Certificate of Education Vocational Major (VCE VM) Engineering student, which is a little different to his cabinetry work, but he said he enjoys it all the same.
“I’m school based so I finish in August then I start as a full-time apprentice next year,” he said.
“I’m pretty keen, half keen to get out of school but I don’t mind it at the same time.
“I’m excited to see what it brings.
“I’m just doing one foot at a time and seeing how it goes.
“If you told me five years ago I’d be doing this I’d probably laugh at your back but it is pretty cool, I don’t mind doing it and I have good boys around me that just make it so much more fun.”
