The firsts are in a strong position against Nirranda, batting their 80 overs last weekend, and will defend 8-229.

The seconds were able to defend their total of 113, while the thirds suffered their first loss just failing to chase down 102.

The firsts faced Nirranda Titans at the large Jones Oval in Warrnambool last Saturday.

Winning the toss, the Lions elected to bat on a hard turf wicket that didn’t provide a lot of bounce.

Boundaries were hard to come by on the big ground, with only six achieved while there were 11 threes recorded.

The first wicket to fall was Isaac Toombs for 30 off 48 balls when the score was 40.

A direct throw run-out ended Dom Moloney’s inning for 12 with the score at 58.

Liam Geary and Bailey Kavenagh put on 60 for the third wicket when Geary was bowled for a team high 46 when one jagged back.

Gus Bourke fell for four when the score was 130.

Kavenagh pushed his score to 32 when he fell trying to increase the run rate after the tea break.

Isaac Kenna (23) and Tim Keane pushed the total to 182 before Kenna was dismissed.

Stephen O’Connor fell cheaply for one before Luke Kenna (25) and Keane added 36 for the eighth wicket when Kenna was another victim of a direct throw run-out.

Keane finished the day unbeaten on 28.

The Lions bowling attack has plenty of options and will be strengthened with the availability of Tyson Hay this weekend.

The seconds faced Koroit on their turf wicket and were sent in to bat. The wicket played on was a bit up and down and batsmen struggled to make big totals, with sundries being the top scorer with 23.

Liam Venn (20) was the best which included two sixes and one boundary.

Martin Wynd was next best with 14 followed by Andrew Battistello in his 100th game (11) and Hugh Giblin and Ned Roberts (10 each).

The first wicket fell at seven, courtesy of Hugh Giblin’s bowling and Michael Payne’s catching.

The best partnership of the match saw Koroit progress to 39; from then the match was turned around by tight bowling.

Firstly, Tim Delaney in his first game for the club, bowled nine overs, three maidens, 1-13.

Andrew Battistello 2-15 was also effective with the ball while Martin Wynd achieved his first five wicket haul, finishing with six overs, three maidens, 5-7.

A run out ended the innings with Koroit dismissed for 75.

This was the last game for 2024 for the seconds who have the bye next weekend.

The thirds, playing Warrnambool at the Allen Oval, were sent into the field on what proved to be a difficult day to make runs.

Warrnambool was bowled out for 102 in the 38th over.

Toby Roberts took a career best 3-9 and Dean Abbott 3-22 were the main wicket takers.

Darcy Abbott took his first senior wicket, Tom Kenna in his first game for the merged club took his first wicket and played with son Hugh for the first time.

With the bat there were three reasonable partnerships with 21 for the first, 30 for the third and 18 for the last, with not much made for the other seven wickets.

Sundries was the top score with 23, Isaac Byron being the top scorer with 15, Tom Kenna 11 and Dean Abbott 10 the only players to reach double figures.

The thirds travel to Winslow this weekend to play Spring Creek which will be a battle between second and fourth on the ladder.

It was a tough week for the juniors with the under 17s being outrighted by Allansford Panmure.

Only Jack Farrell was able to reach double figures with 11.

The under 15s, against Nestles, made 6-81 from their 20 overs with Jack Farrell top scoring with 21 whiles sundries contributed a massive 42 extras.

Nestles made 6-104 in the run chase Leo Beasley taking 2-10 while single wickets fell to Jack Farrell, Lucia and Ollie Clarke, and Riley McIntosh.

Extras contributed 31 of the 9-56 the under 13s made.

Harry Beaton ran out of partners to be unbeaten on nine runs.

Jordon Greaves had the best figures of 2-6 with Liam Kenna, Ollie Clarke and Jackson Irving taking one wicket each, with Russell’s Creek finishing on 6-84.
