Mixed results for the Lions senior squads
THE Noorat Terang Lions Cricket Club had a mixed bag of senior results over the weekend.
Covering a number of unavailabilities for the weekend the Firsts have already gained first innings points and the Thirds won a thriller, but the Seconds were below par.
The Firsts won the toss and put Hawkesdale in on a new wicket.
The bowlers bowled well with a bit more in the wicket this week, and the fielders took some great catches, which saw the visitors dismissed in the 43rd over for 67.
Isaac Toombs cleaned up the tail finishing with 3-11 from seven overs while Gus Bourke, after two uncharacteristic opening overs, returned later from the other end to take 3-20 from 11 – including a spectacular one-handed caught and bowled.
Tyson Hay provided a strong 2-8 stint while Tim Delaney, in his first game in the Division, took 1-5 from 7 overs.
Sam Munro (1-12) rounded out the wicket takers, while also contributing an excellent one-handed diving catch in the slips.
Bailey Kaveanagh took three catches, one of which was a full-length dive in the covers.
The Lions had 34 overs to bat when Kavenagh’s wicket fell for nine runs with the total runs sitting on just 20.
But Toombs and Harry Schrama then saw the Lions take first innings points with a 105 second wicket partnership.
Unfortunately, Schrama lost his wicket after making his first 50 in this Division off 71 balls with a trio of fours.
In sight of stumps, Tyson Hay was also dismissed for five runs.
But the strength of the innings from Toombs put the Lions in excellent position – he was unbeaten on 78 of 92 balls with 13 boundaries, and the Lions concluded the first innings at 3-150.
The Seconds struggled with bat, ball and fielding in their match against Allansford-Panmure.
The Gators bowled first and were in the match when young Darcy Abbott took the wickets of openers Flynn Gleeson and Steve Aberline to finish with 3-28.
Hugh Giblin, in his second spell, improved his figures to take 3-29 from four overs.
Andrew Battistellofinished 1-29 and Martin Wynd 1-28 from nine overs, which helped restrict the scoring in the middle overs, but the home side pushed to 9-199 after their 45 overs thanks to a dominant showing from Micahel Smith – top scoring with 71 off just 85 balls, with only four boundaries.
Chasing, the Lions were in big trouble being 6-37.
Hugh Giblin 19 and Warren Attrill 11 were the only players to reach double figures.
For Attrill, he reached his 1000th career run.
A much stronger side will be available this weekend with three Division 1 players available for selection for the match against Russell’s Creek.
The Thirds were at home to Dennington in a clash between the two top sides, with the Lions winning the toss and opting to bat first.
Mark Lillico held the batting together, carrying his bat to make 77no off 112 balls with six boundaries.
He combined with son, Sam,who added 15 off 59 deliveries before the third wicket fell.
Ryley Hutchins was the only other to reach double figures with 19.
The Lions finished with 8-170 off 40 overs.
The bowlers appeared to have things under control with Dennington 8-136 thanks to Lucia Clarke 2-21, Charlie Roberts 2-34 and Toby Roberts 3-44.
An eighth-wicket partnership saw the pendulum swing towards the visitors until John Clarke 2-37 wrapped up the innings with three balls left to ensure a Noorat Terang win by a nail-biting four runs.
Wicketkeeper Sam Lillico topped off a good match with four catches while Ryley Hutchins took three.
This Saturday the Thirds play the Nirranda Titans at the Warrnambool College oval.
The Under 17s weren’t able to chase down Mortlake Cobden’s 229, however against the strong bowling attack they batted their 45 overs to finish 7-86.
Isaac Byron was not out 25 off 91 balls. Max Heffernan and Caleb Bamford both finished with 11.
Sam Lillico and Flynn Gleeson both occupied the crease for significant periods facing 45 and 53 balls.
Next game will be the last for the season against Dennington at Noorat on Tuesday evening.
The Under 15s in their two-day game against Mortlake Cobden are behind the eight ball.
Batting first they were dismissed for 83 with Flynn Gleeson top scoring with 26 off 70 balls.
Hugh Kenna 9, Sonny Davis 8 and Ollie Clarke 7no were the next best with the bat.
In reply the home side was 0-73 with Hugh Kenna the most economical with 0-20 from 5 and Lucia Clarke 0-13 from 3.
