Semi-final awaits Lions

NOORAT Terang Cricket Club’s division one Championship side will face Mortlake in this weekend’s semi-final.

The two sides played at Terang last weekend in a one-day game which saw Isaac Toombs achieve his second century against Mortlake, his third for the season and eclipse his previous highest score.

The Lions won the toss and elected to bat first.

Bailey Kavenagh opened the innings with Toombs and the pair put on 157.

Kavenagh made it consecutive half centuries with 53 from 89 balls with six boundaries.

Tyson Hay went quickly and Stephen O’Connor joined Toombs with the pair adding 67.

Toombs brought up his 100 off 125 balls with 11 boundaries.

He then accelerated his scoring with a further four boundaries and three sixes and was finally dismissed on 144 (going for a six to bring up his 150) in the third last over.

Toombs scored his last 44 off only 22 balls.

O’Connor remained 19no and the Lions had amassed 4/246 from 45 overs.

Mortlake batted out their 45 overs, but fell well short of the total being 6/138.

Sam Munro was the only multiple wicket taker with 2/36, while Tim Keane and Toombs were miserly finishing with 1/14 and 1/13 from their nine overs.

Gus Bourke was missing from this game and his availability will strengthen the depth of bowlers.

This weekend will be on a new wicket in different conditions and with 80 overs to bat.

The winner will progress to the grand final at the Ubergang Oval in Allansford the following weekend.

Division four was unable to bring home the premiership trophy after losing a low scoring game against Dennington at the Brierly Ground.

Put into bat, the side struggled as wickets fell quickly.

The Lions were dismissed in the 21st over for just 57, with John Clarke top scoring with 14.

Tom Conheady gave the side hope taking four wickets, but with not enough runs to defend, Dennington achieved the total six wickets down.
