Strong start for Lions
THE 2024/25 season has started well for the Noorat Terang Lions in the Championship Division of the Warrnambool Moyne and District Cricket Association
Playing at Noorat against Allansford Panmure, the visitors won the toss and elected to bat.
In his first game for the Lions, Tyson Hay made the initial break through.
However, the second wicket added 69 before “The Fossil” Tim Keane made the break through courtesy of a smart piece of glove work by Luke Kenna.
Tim bowled unchanged in tandem with English recruit Isaac Toombs.
This pair effectively slowed the momentum of the visitors with their off spin bowling, with Tim taking 2/28 from his nine overs and Isaac 2/29 which included a great catch off his own bowling.
The pace bowlers returned for the remaining overs, with Tyson taking 2/27, Isaac Kenna 1/33 and Liam Geary 1/35.
Sam Munro opened the bowling and was very economical, conceding just five runs from his five overs.
Allansford Panmure finished on 8/164 from their 45 overs.
The Lions started their run chase with a new opening combination (both playing their first games for the club).
The pair of Isaac Toombs and Dom Moloney played a chanceless innings which saw the Lions chase down the total in 34 overs.
Isaac Toombs followed up his century in the practice match the previous weekend with another.
His first 50 come off 66 balls and the next off just 30 balls.
His innings of 119no included 16 boundaries and two sixes.
This innings showed his batting class as the only time he took the aerial route was when he put one over the boundary.
His timing and footwork were exquisite and at no time were the bowlers able to beat his bat.
His partner, Dom, helped to wear the bowlers down as he contributed 38 from 99 balls with four boundaries.
Last season the best opening partnership was 57 - this pair has the best first wicket partnership in the Firsts and Isaac now has the highest club score.
Last weekend also saw Charlie Scanlon play his 50th game.
This weekend will be a replay of last season’s grand final against Hawkesdale at Hawkesdale.
It will also mark Tyson Hay’s 150th game.
The second’s and third’s don’t play their first game until the following weekend, when all three sides will be playing away games.
Two junior matches have been played, with the under 13s starting on Saturday against Nestles.
The Lions batted first and made 4\89 from their 24 overs.
Ollie Clarke 23ret and Sonny Davis 21ret were the main scorers, with support from Liam Kenna 10 and Noah Conheady 10.
Nestles passed the total in the 20th over.
All players bowled, with Sonny Davis being the most economical with just three runs coming from his two overs.
This season the club has been able to field an under 17s side and its first match was a T20 at Dennington on Tuesday.
The Lions batted first, making 5/94 with Max Heffernan top scoring with 33ret.
Isaac Byron was also impressive opening with 28.
The side was made up of players from the club’s three junior teams and made Dennington work with bat as they finished at 5\108 at the end of 20 overs.
Wicket takers were Charlie Roberts, Jordie Bailey, Tayte McMaster and Hamish Molan.
There is still the opportunity for any junior players, male or female, to play cricket for the Lions.
The under 15s will play their first match Friday afternoon against Allansford Panmure at Panmure.
The under 13s will travel to Purnin to play the Northern Raiders on Saturday morning and the under 17s will be at the hard wicket ground in Terang against Warrnambool on Tuesday.
