Strong weekend for senior Lions

NOORAT TERANG finished the weekend with all three senior cricket sides celebrating wins (and nail-biting finishes for both the seconds and thirds).

Last weekend was Dom Kenna’s 200th game for the Lions and Noorat.

His career started in the 2007/08 season and spanned 170 games for Noorat and now 30 for the Lions.

Dom has made 1654 runs at an average of 10.34 with a highest score of 62.

Although not bowling much now, he has taken 60 wickets at an average of 21.8 (with best figures of 3/14) and has taken 35 catches.

A humorous aspect from this match was a comment made by one of the junior players who thought Dom’s father was also playing that day – it was actually Dom’s older brother Nick playing his first game of the season!

The second day of the Lions v Mortlake premier division game saw the batsmen preform much better, however the bowlers were unable to live up to their high standard from the previous weekend.

Mortlake resumed its second innings at 5/14 and successfully batted for 53 overs, making 220 and casting aside any thoughts of an outright win by leaving the Lions needing 212 runs off 24 overs.

This week Liam Geary added another wicket to finish with 2/17.

Oscar Ritchie was given the opportunity to bowl and took 2/27 from 6.2 overs.

The spin twins, Delaney and Keane, both took a wicket each.

The batting order was switched around with Liam Geary making 19, Max Heffernan 15 and Bailey Kavenagh with 10 not out reaching double figures.

This week the Lions will host top of the ladder Allansford-Panmure in the last game of the season.

The Lions will need to produce another big win if they are to qualify for the final six, currently sitting in seventh spot.

The division two Lions travelled to Purnim to play the Raiders on their turf wicket.

Batting first and not batting their 45 overs nearly proved costly.

The in-form Brett Hunger, having his best senior year with the bat, made 42 from 58 balls.

Martin Wynd achieved his best score for the season with 42 from 55 balls.

Dom Moloney, in his first game back from injury, made a scintillating 37 off just 39 balls.

Dave Conheady with 19 and young Lachlan Primmer with 15 rounded out the batsmen to achieve double figures in a score of 190.

In reply, the Raiders at one stage were 8/103 with Primmer taking 3/44, Hunger 3/27 and Charlie Roberts 2/28.

An 84 run, ninth wicket partnership looked likely to take away victory from the Lions.

However, it was Nick Kenna that got the break through and that was followed up by Hugh Giblin getting the last wicket (caught by Brett Hunger), giving the Lions victory by the barest of margins, just one run.

The division two Lions have the bye this weekend.

The division four Lions played Nestles at the Warrnambool College oval.

Batting first the Lions made 7-200, but there was a hiccup with the live scoring at the end of the innings, the score showing 193.

This was caused by the scorers missing a wide and the extra ball bowled which was scored off.

This total was achieved by captain Toby Roberts achieving his highest score of 61 off 92 balls.

Likewise, Ned Roberts achieved his highest score with 63 from just 58 balls with five fours and two sixes.

Caleb Bamford also achieved his highest senior score with 38 off 54 with seven fours.

A century by Nestles player Ali Latif nearly stole the win when he fell on the third last ball to Ned Roberts.

Andrew Battistello was the only multiple wicket taker with 2/24.

There were two run outs with Dean Abbott, Bamford and Tom Conheady all taking a single wicket. Nestles finished on 8/194.

This win puts the side in fourth spot by a win.

The next two games are against sides below them, starting with Wangoom this weekend.

The last junior side to finish their season was the under 13s, finishing off their two day game against Nestles.

Evenly poised at the half way mark, Nestles consolidated by adding a further 62 runs to their total.

Unfortunately, the Lions had six players make ducks with Zac Clarke being the only player to add to last week’s total to reach 23.

The Lions fell 59 runs behind.
