Toombs notches 500 runs

THE Noorat Terang Cricket Club Lions recommenced their season after the Christmas break, hosting Allansford Panmure at the Terang Turf ground.

The Lions won the toss and elected to bat and for the first time this season were dismissed in the 54th over for 158.

Isaac Toombs became the first Lion to bring up 500 runs.

Needing 18 runs to achieve the target, Toombs brought up his 50 off 61 balls with six boundaries.

Unfortunately, he was out the next ball.

Toombs and Tyson Hay created a record third wicket partnership of 53 against the visitors.

Hay top scored with 66 off 104 balls which included three bounds and two sixes.

Bailey Kavenagh was the only other player to reach double figures with 11, while Tim Keane, Stephen O’Connor and Dom Moloney were the only others to face more than 10 deliveries.

Allansford Panmure had 23 overs to face and make inroads into the run chase.

However, the Lions bowling attack bowled well and had reduced the visitors to 7-29 at stumps.

Hay struck in his first over and bowled well to take 2-8 from seven overs.

Co-captain Liam Geary was convinced to bowl after the drinks break when the visitors had looked to steady.

While he hadn’t taken many wickets this season he took one in each of his first three overs finishing with the figures of 3-8 from four overs.

Tim Keane came on at the other end and was able to spin and swing his arm ball to finish with the fine figures of 2-2 from four overs.

Both Geary and Keane were well supported by the catching efforts behind the stumps of Luke Kenna and Dom Moloney who both took two catches.

This week Gus Bourke will strengthen the bowling attack as they push for victory.

The visitors bat down to number 11 and victory will have to be earned from continuing the good bowling and good catching.

The seconds and thirds will resume this weekend with both sides being at home.

The seconds will play top side Spring Creek at Noorat and the thirds play Wangoom at the Terang number two ground.

The under 17s also have a one day game on Sunday against Nestles on the Terang Turf and follow up with a two-day match against Mortlake at Noorat on Tuesday.
