Upgrades: Works are now underway to install a new viewing platform and weather shelter at Mount Noorat in a bid to heighten viewer experiences at the iconic landmark.

The Mount Noorat Walking Track will be closed for around six weeks to complete the installation of a new weather shelter and viewing platform at the Mount Noorat Crater.

“Work has started on a new viewing platform and weather shelter on Mount Noorat,” a Corangamite Shire Council spokesperson said.

“The works require significant earthworks and heavy machinery.

“Construction is expected to be complete by June 1.”

The viewing platform will feature a metal wire perimeter to ensure views are not obstructed, in addition to bluestone seating.

The weather shelter will be located further down the walking track, with bluestone seating, metal roofing and large acrylic panels to ensure views can be maintained while walkers take a break should conditions be difficult.

“The new platform and shelter have been designed for the harsh environment and will be durable, long-term assets to Mount Noorat,” the spokesperson said.

“The old treated pine viewing platform on the edge of the crater had reached the end of its useful life.

“The new platform will have views looking north west towards the crater.

“The shelter, about 50 metres down the gravel path, will be oriented to avoid prevailing winds.

“It will look south down the gully.”

Seating and information signs will be installed and native tussock grass planted around the new structures.

“The project is the work of the Mount Noorat Management Committee, which is responsible for implementing the 30-year vision of the Mount Noorat Management Plan which aims to provide quality visitor experiences,” the council spokesperson said.

“The trail will be closed for about six weeks.

“Readers can keep up with the progress on the committee’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/MtNoorat or call council on 5593 7100.”
